Professional – Health Policy Leadership

Global Effort

My experiences outside the US began in Liberia in 1969 when I spent 2 months in up-country Lofa County in ZorZor at Curran Lutheran Hospital.  Legendary nurse, Esther Bacon (K Hein, 2022 in press, “ZorZor Liberia: One Health…One World” essay in Friends Of Liberia Anthology. Editor: Susan Greisen) and missionary physician, Paul Mertens ran the hospital and nearby Leper Colony and TB treatment center as well as established a Nursing School for the dozen or so ethnic groups in the surrounding county, enabling patients to have health care workers who knew their dialect and cultural practices.  I was ‘imprinted’ with a model of care that was truly community-based, emphasized care of people in partnership with family and administered life-saving preventive interventions including immunizations against diphtheria, tetanus, polio.
