Expressing themes of the cycle of life and death in nature, and in our lives; creating pieces expressing the ideas of life as traveling both outward as well as inward as expressed in Rilke’s poem from The Book of Hours of ‘ever widening circles that reach out across the world. I may not complete this last one, but I give myself to it.”
Organizations
ChildFund International
This non-profit organization connects individual children and youth with “sponsors” who help support the youngster throughout their development through a modest monthly contribution. The support enables the youngster to stay in school as well as supporting health-promoting community projects. As part of their Board I was able to make program visits in many countries including Ecuador, Peru, and India and followed the development of one girl throughout her transition from a young child to a capable adult in Uganda.
International Rescue Committee
As a member of IRC’s Board of Advisors since 2003, I have witnessed the growth of this august non-profit organization now serving displaced people in over 40 countries. Their refugee resettlement program in the USA is the largest one….and is now active in arranging and welcoming Afghan refugees and others, as the target number for this coming years has been raised by the government to 125,000 after a period of vastly reduced numbers permitted to enter. There has never been a greater need for us to connect and reach out and welcome displaced people.
RAND Health (RAND Corp)
RAND’s mission is to use research to inform policy in a wide variety of areas, with their Health Division being the largest. As part of their Board of Advisors for 2 decades, I have both learned (and hopefully contributed) to their taking on important topics of contemporary conundrums in health and healthcare, bringing together both public and private sector Board members working with their extremely capable staff to avoid “Truth Decay” at this time of discord in the country when evidenced-based approaches are so needed, but often ignored or castigated.
Global Health Equity Center (GHEC) at Dartmouth
GHEC is a growing new organizations on whose Board I serve that brings together the global health activities of Dartmouth Medical School with other programs at Dartmouth College including specific projects on First People of The Arctic Regions, as w ell as partnering with organizations in Tanzania and many other African and South American partners and programs
