Professional – Health Policy Leadership

US Senate Finance Committee

During the Clinton Administration in the 1990’s, efforts were made to take a leap in improving health care.  Through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Health Policy Fellowship, I was able to spend 1 ½ years in the US Sentate Finance Committee (1993-95) as part of their professional staff during this major push in health care reform.  My areas of responsibility included crafting various ‘benefit packages’ for different age groups (infants, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly) as well as crafting language to give ‘parity’ to the way mental health and substance abuse were treated and funded.  Although these attempts did not successfully become law at that time, many of the paving stones for subsequent reform legislation were laid.
